Three days on the unpaved roads of Ayacucho help one experience, in one's back and kidneys, a small part of the endless drama in that department. The distance between districts within the same province, even after so many years since the violence unleashed by Sendero Luminoso, remains harsh enough to condemn the high-Andean inhabitants to isolation and poverty.
