The Battle of the First Days
Political violence in the department of Ayacucho began on May 18, 1980, when members of the PCP-SL burned the ballot boxes and electoral rolls of the Jurado Electoral of the district of Chuschi, province of Cangallo, during preparations for the presidential elections that year. A year later, armed actions increased in that city, where the PCP-SL began executing its Second Military Plan for the Development of the People's War, which would encompass a series of violent activities from January 1981 to 1983. As part of that Plan, on October 11, 1981, approximately fifty members of the PCP-SL assaulted the Police Post of the district of Tambo, province of La Mar, Ayacucho, where they killed several police officers and stole a significant number of weapons.
