The Mirror of the Other: Japan Facing the Hostage Crisis in Peru
Thus the so-called hostage crisis, which occurred between December 17, 1996 and April 22, 1997, had a tremendous impact. It not only highlighted Peru's internal problems but also revealed a series of challenges for countries that in one way or another have close ties with it. In Japan, after the takeover of the residence, the weakness of the crisis management system was seriously called into question from various perspectives. It was also argued that the problems would not be resolved simply by establishing a new system. From my point of view, the essence of the matter lies in the fact that in Japan we do not have sufficient knowledge about the situation of various regions and countries around the world, including Latin America and, in this case, Peru. We cannot say that the Japanese have accumulated extensive studies on Peru and other Andean countries, although we certainly have some. (Excerpt from the introduction).
