The Works of Memory
This volume initiates a series of books that makes available to the public the results of a program developed by the Regional Advisory Panel for Latin America (RAP) of the Social Science Research Council, whose purpose is to promote research and the training of young researchers on memories of political repression in the Southern Cone. With funding from the Ford, Rockefeller, and Hewlett foundations, and under the direction of Elizabeth Jelin and Carlos Iván Degregori, the program supported approximately 60 fellows from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and the United States. As the inaugural volume of the series, this book presents the thinking of its director, which also served as the conceptual framework guiding the program's research. (Excerpt from the foreword).
