Chungui: Violence and Traces of Memory.

Moving between images of retablos (created by the artist) and texts of testimonies (collected by the anthropologist), Edilberto Jiménez, an Ayacuchan anthropologist and retablo maker, presents with striking images and raw accounts the history of political violence in Ayacucho during the 1980s between the Peruvian Army and the Maoist group Sendero Luminoso. Jiménez invents new tools combining ethnography and the artistic tradition of the retablo in order to express the pain and horror experienced by the inhabitants of the locality of Chungui, amid one of the bloodiest wars in Latin America.
