Remains of a woman apparently raped by Army members during Operation Aries.

In the district of José Crespo y Castillo, province of Leoncio Prado, the remains of a woman apparently raped by members of the Army during Operation Aries. According to testimony collected by the Comisión de la Verdad y Reconciliación, the body belonged to Clorinda Penadillo Rayo, approximately 17 years old. On April 5, 1994, with the intention of eliminating the remnants of Sendero Luminoso operating on the left bank of the Huallaga River in Huánuco, Operation Aries began. On the 12th of that same month, the Army bombed the communities of Moyuna, Cayumba, and El Salvador in the province of Leoncio Prado, Huánuco. According to local residents' testimonies, some military patrols committed arbitrary executions of unarmed civilians. The Comisión de la Verdad y Reconciliación maintains that during this operation there were arbitrary detentions, extrajudicial executions, sexual violations, and torture.
