Tomás Quispe Sayhua, together with his family, accompanies the remains of his father Aurelio Quispe Sayhua to the cemetery in Orurillo, one year before being murdered by members of Sendero Luminoso. On December 3, 1989, members of Sendero Luminoso raided Orurillo, Melgar, and murdered four authorities, three community members, and one union leader — a total of 8 victims. Among the authorities were Tomás Quispe Sayhua, the mayor representing Izquierda Unida and an important local leader recognized for his fight for land rights. Also murdered were Víctor Quispe Sayhua (governor), Mario Lizardo Quispe (former leader of the CAT Quisuni), Nicolás Choquehuanta (Justice of the Peace), Benito Mamani (radio technician), Pedro Pablo Tito Limachi (teacher), Julio Guillermo Céspedes Santander (school principal), and Godofredo Marrón (teacher and leader of the Sindicato Único de Trabajadores de Orurillo).
