Expressions of grief and outrage during the funerals of the journalists killed in Uchuraccay. On January 26, 1983, a group of residents of Uchuraccay murdered, in that Ayacuchan community, journalists Eduardo de la Piniella, Pedro Sánchez, and Félix Gavilán of El Diario de Marka; Jorge Luis Mendívil and Willy Retto of El Observador; Jorge Sedano of La República; Amador García of the magazine Oiga; and Octavio Infante of the newspaper Noticias de Ayacucho. Along with the journalists, guide Juan Argumedo García and Severino Morales Ccente, a community member from Uchuraccay, were also killed. The eight journalists and the guide had traveled from the city of Ayacucho to the highlands of Huanta to verify the execution of seven alleged Sendero Luminoso members carried out by peasants from Huaychao and Macabamba. After being killed, the journalists were buried in four shallow graves located in the outskirts of the community. On January 30, the news reached the mass media. Family members of the victims, journalists from various outlets, and some political leaders traveled to the city of Ayacucho.
