A group of people search for their loved ones among the massacred bodies at the Mazamari massacre

A group of people search for their loved ones among the bodies massacred in the Mazamari massacre. On August 18, 1993, a group of 150 to 300 people accompanied by Asháninka natives entered eight communities in the Tsiriari valley (district of Mazamari, province of Satipo), murdered 71 residents — including 16 minors — and left 10 others wounded. In some cases sexual abuse and looting of victims' homes were recorded. Despite being known in national media as an "Asháninka massacre," 21 of the victims were Nomatsiguenga natives; the rest were settlers established in the area. The majority of testimonies received by the Comisión de la Verdad y Reconciliación indicate that the perpetrators were members of Sendero Luminoso.
