Exhumation of victims of the El Frontón massacre
Exhumation of the victims of the El Frontón massacre at the Pachacamác Cemetery in Lima. On June 18 and 19, 1986, Sendero Luminoso inmates held for the crime of terrorism rioted at the Lurigancho, El Frontón, and Santa Bárbara prisons. The government of Alan García ordered the Joint Command of the Armed Forces to suppress the riot. More than 200 inmates accused of terrorism died due to the deliberate and excessive use of force by State agents. These agents extrajudicially executed inmates who had surrendered or were already under control. The most serious actions took place at El Frontón, where the Navy Demolition Unit destroyed the so-called "Blue Pavilion" holding 150 prisoners, and at Lurigancho, where Guardia Republicana personnel murdered 124 inmates.
