Image of Edith Lagos

Image of Edith Lagos, a student from Ayacucho who died on September 2, 1982 in Umaca, Apurímac, during a clash between Sendero Luminoso members and members of the Guardia Republicana. Her image as a young university student, from a family of provincial merchants, who presented herself as a "social fighter," was glorified by Sendero Luminoso and a sector of the press: both turned her into an icon for the general population of Ayacucho. She was not an important leader of the subversive group; however, her burial in the city of Huamanga drew approximately ten thousand citizens. During the funeral, the requiem Mass was officiated by the Bishop of Ayacucho.
