In December 1999, María Elena is released from the Santa Mónica prison in Lima through the efforts of the Comisión Ad-hoc, a body created in 1996 to remedy the arbitrary actions of a regime that, established after the self-coup of April 5, could sentence a person to life imprisonment without providing the minimum guarantees for their defense.
