This attack was part of a series of attacks against Centromín Perú facilities during the 1988 Christmas season. The attacks occurred in the context of a mining labor conflict and after the assassination of union leader Saúl Cantoral Coronel. Days before, there had been rumors of an armed strike in La Oroya, which in the end did not take place.
