Murder of journalist Hugo Bustíos Saavedra and attack on Eduardo Rojas Arce
Journalist Hugo Bustíos was killed and Eduardo Rojas wounded in ambush attributed to military in Huanta
On November 24, 1988, journalists Hugo Bustíos Saavedra and Eduardo Yeny Rojas went to Erapata to investigate the murder of Primitiva Jorge Ayala and her son Guillermo Sulca Jorge by the Shining Path. They were ambushed by individuals in civilian clothes with white polo shirts who shot at them. Bustíos died after receiving multiple bullet wounds and an explosive device placed on his body. Rojas was wounded but managed to escape. Witnesses identified the attackers as military personnel from the Castropampa barracks.
