Detention, torture and rape of Maria Magdalena Monteza Benavides in Ñaña

A university student was arrested in the district of Ñaña on September 17, 1988. During her detention she was the victim of sexual violence and torture. As a result of the rape, she became pregnant. The case illustrates the systematic practice of sexual violence against women detainees by State agents during the internal armed conflict. The victim faced multiple difficulties in denouncing the facts due to shame and fear, and subsequently had to assume a forced pregnancy resulting from the rape.
