On June 12, 1988, the DIRCOTE (Directorate Against Terrorism) captured Osmán Morote Barrionuevo in Lima, considered the number two in the hierarchy of the Communist Party of Peru - Shining Path (PCP-SL). The capture represented a significant blow against the command structure of the subversive organization. On June 27, the oral trial against Morote Barrionuevo began in a public hearing. Subsequently, on July 28, 1988, Manuel Febres Flores, Morote's defense lawyer, was murdered, an act that was claimed by the so-called Rodrigo Franco Command.
