Murder of 17 people in San Gerardo
In June 1988, the Shining Path PCP attacked the town of San Gerardo in Sivia, Ayacucho, killing 17 people in the context of its strategy of territorial control in the Apurimac River Valley.
In June 1988, the Shining Path PCP attacked the town of San Gerardo, located in the district of Sivia, in the jungle of Ayacucho, in the Apurimac River Valley. During this raid, the PCP-SL killed 17 people. This attack took place in the context of the pressure of the subversives to enroll the population they needed to face the permanent siege of the Self-Defense Committees in the area. The event occurred in the same period in which other communities in the Apurimac River Valley suffered similar attacks, such as Pichiwilca in April 1988 and Canayre in February 1989.
