On December 31, 1987, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso blew up 30 high-voltage towers of the Mantaro interconnected system. This attack was part of the Shining Path's strategy of sabotaging the country's electrical infrastructure, seeking to generate massive blackouts and demonstrate the subversive group's capacity for action. The attack on the Mantaro system represented one of the most significant sabotage actions against the national energy infrastructure during the internal armed conflict.
