The Carabayllo Defense Front began to function in 1987 as an organization that provided political education to the population. In this front there were people linked to both the PCP-SL and the MRTA, who distributed flyers and gave speeches. The Defense Front was later dismantled in the 1990s, at the same time that several Shining Path leaders were captured and the President of the National Canteen Commission, Rosa Landaberry, was forced to leave the country.
