On July 7, 1986, the governor of Huallan and his son were assassinated as part of a series of violent actions that included murders in Usnuyoc (April 28), Totora and Vilcabamba (June 22), and attacks on villages such as Totora and Usmayo (May 10). This event is part of the period of maximum violence in the Apurimac River Valley between 1986-1989, when the PCP-SL intensified its actions in the area.
