First actions of the PCP-SL in the Central Rainforest

Between 1985 and 1988, the PCP-SL began its actions in the Central Jungle through selective assassinations of alleged criminals and informers in colonist villages. Beginning in 1988, they intensified their presence with more regular visits to native communities, achieving a generalized presence by 1989.

Between 1985 and 1988, the Shining Path commanders of the PCP-SL carried out selective assassinations of alleged delinquents or 'informers' in the colonist villages of the Central Jungle. The Asháninka population felt fear when they heard about these executions, but at the same time recognized a positive aspect in these events, since most of the settlers were considered as invaders of their territory or as people of 'bad life' who had brought with them drug trafficking, prostitution and abuse. Around 1988, the PCP-SL began a more aggressive campaign of actions in the area, increasing its presence through more regular visits to native communities. By 1989, the presence of the PCP-SL in the area was widespread and open.
