Forced disappearance of journalist Jaime Ayala Sulca

Journalist denouncing human rights violations was detained, tortured and killed by the Navy in Huanta.

On August 2, 1984, journalist Jaime Boris Ayala Sulca, 22 years old, correspondent of the newspaper La República and host of a program on Radio Huanta 2000, went to the Navy Base at the Huanta Stadium to complain about the raid on his mother's house that took place that morning. Several witnesses saw him enter the stadium at approximately 10:00 a.m., but never saw him leave. His mother, sister and other witnesses waited at the door for hours. The military denied having him in custody. According to the testimony of a former Marine, Commander 'Camión' considered him an enemy because of his denunciations of human rights violations. He was tortured for several days in the stadium. When the Minister of the Navy asked for his surrender, the commander refused. He was killed, dismembered and buried in different parts of the stadium before the arrival of the Prosecutor of the Nation.
