On August 1, 1984, militants of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso knocked down an electrical system tower in the district of Pazos, province of Tayacaja. This attack was part of the Shining Path's strategy of sabotaging the region's electrical infrastructure. The attack took place in a context where military pressure was increasing, demanding the villagers to organize themselves into patrols to avoid subversive incursions. The towers of the electrical system continued to be frequent targets of PCP-SL attacks in the area.
