Invasion of Huaycán

First organized invasion of Huaycán on July 15, 1984, as part of a municipal urban habilitation program during the administration of Alfonso Barrantes. The event was violently repressed and marked the beginning of an important human settlement in the eastern zone of Lima.

On July 15, 1984, the first invasion of Huaycán was organized as part of the 'Special Program for Urban Development of the Huaycán area', implemented during the municipal administration of Alfonso Barrantes. This invasion was part of the urban expansion process of Metropolitan Lima towards the peripheral cones. The event occurred in a context of increasing political violence and was mentioned as an example of the violent repression that characterized the 1980s. The Huaycán invasion represented a milestone in the formation of new human settlements in eastern Lima, an area that would later become the scene of disputes between subversive groups and the State.
