Conflict between MRTA and PCP-SL in Peru
In November 1987, tensions escalated between the MRTA and PCP-SL in San Martín, Peru. The MRTA accused the PCP-SL of violent attacks not only against them but also against popular sectors and organizations. The MRTA criticized the PCP-SL's actions as detrimental to the revolutionary cause and called for adherence to the Geneva Convention, highlighting the severe confrontations and their inability to influence the situation.
El PCP-SL realizó ataques escritos y verbales contra el MRTA, particularmente tras su aparición pública en San Martín en noviembre de 1987, acusándolos de ser el «brazo armado» del revisionismo de IU. Los militantes del PCP-SL vieron al MRTA no como una fuerza revolucionaria diferente sino como un adversario peligroso, lo que derivó en agresiones armadas que obligaron al MRTA a defenderse. Los ataques del PCP-SL se extendieron también a sectores populares y sus organizaciones, generando crítica acérrima de la dirección del MRTA que condenaba el ultraizquierdismo senderista por desprestigiar la lucha armada. El MRTA llamó tanto al PCP-SL como al gobierno de Alan García a humanizar la guerra respetando la Convención de Ginebra, aunque sus demandas fueron ignoradas.
