In April 1984, members of the Peruvian Army murdered 32 inhabitants of Huarapite, a town in the district of Chiara in the province of Huamanga. This event occurred in the context of the indiscriminate repression carried out by the Armed Forces in the area during 1984, a year that registered the highest number of civilian murders in the provinces of Huanta, Huamanga and La Mar. The Huarapite massacre is part of a series of violent events perpetrated by the security forces in the district of Chiara during 1983 and 1984, including other mass killings in Sachabamba and Bellavista.
