In March 1984, rumors began to circulate among the population of the Apurimac River Valley about the arrival of montoneros (civil defense groups) from Chungui. The villagers received information that these groups were coming "like ants" and were progressively advancing through different localities. Their presence was first reported in Lechemayo, then in Monterrico and Anchihuay, where the first civil defense headquarters were established. This march of community members, led by Major "Vic" or "Rick", went down the Apurimac River in an unstoppable manner, forming part of the organization of the peasant resistance against the Shining Path. Rumor had it that in two weeks they would reach other areas, and indeed successive headquarters were named: the first in Lechemayo, the second in San Antonio, and the third in Monterrico.
