Prison Riots and Government Crackdown in Peru
On June 18-19, militants of the PCP-SL rioted in three prisons: El Frontón, Lurigancho, and Santa Mónica. The riots coincided with the International Socialist Congress in Lima, drawing media attention. The Peruvian government, led by President García, ordered the military to suppress the riots, resulting in 244 deaths.
El 18 y 19 de junio de 1986, militantes del PCP-SL ejecutaron amotinamientos coordinados en tres penales: El Frontón, Lurigancho y Santa Mónica, aprovechando la cobertura mediática del congreso de la Internacional Socialista en Lima. El gobierno de Alan García encargó a las Fuerzas Armadas sofoccar el motín, operación que resultó en 244 personas muertas. El MRTA condenó estos hechos como violaciones de derechos humanos, citándolos posteriormente como justificación para reanudar sus acciones político-militares contra el gobierno aprista.
