Coca price boom

Boom in the price of coca and its illicit derivatives in the Apurimac River Valley between 1984 and 1986, coinciding with the period of the Shining Path's retreat and the advance of counter-subversive forces in the area.

Between 1984 and 1986 there was a boom in the price of coca and its illicit derivatives in the Apurímac River Valley. This economic phenomenon coincided with a period of intense violence in the area, when the Shining Path was in full retreat in the face of the advance of the Armed Forces and the DECAS (Counter-Subversive Civil Defense). The coca boom occurred in the midst of the link between coca leaf producers and drug traffickers. This economic boom in drug trafficking developed in parallel to the intensification of Shining Path actions between 1986 and 1987, when the PCP-SL sought to enter a new stage of 'strategic balance'.
