Vargas Llosa Commission meeting with community members of Uchuraccay

Communal assembly between the Vargas Llosa Investigation Commission and the Uchuraccay community members, three weeks after the massacre of journalists. The villagers acknowledged their responsibility for the murder of the journalists, claiming authorization from the Sinchis to kill "terrorists", and requested guarantees and support from the government.

The Uchuraccay Events Investigation Commission, chaired by Mario Vargas Llosa, met with the Uchuraccay villagers in an assembly held three weeks after the massacre of the journalists. The dialogue lasted almost three hours and was conducted through translators because none of the commissioners spoke Quechua. During the assembly, the peasants recognized that they were the authors of the murder of the journalists and insisted that they had been authorized by the Sinchis to kill the "terrorists", but were completely silent about the deaths of Juan Argumedo and Severino Huáscar Morales. The community members demanded guarantees and declared their unconditional support for President Belaunde, saying: "Ñoqaykuja siñor presidentitam apuyaniku, siñor, paymanmi sayaniku, siñor, manan pimanchu, siñor" (We support the president, sir, we are with him, sir, with no one else, sir). They also demanded basic necessities such as flashlight, battery, flashlight to defend themselves from possible terrorist attacks.
