On January 30, 1983, the bodies of the eight journalists murdered in Uchuraccay four days earlier were exhumed. The images of the lynched bodies transmitted on television shocked the country.
On Sunday, January 30, 1983, a large group of national and foreign reporters, parliamentarians, ecclesiastics and relatives of the murdered journalists arrived in Ayacucho in a plane chartered by the newspaper La Republica. That same day the bodies of the eight journalists murdered on January 26 in Uchuraccay were exhumed. The images of the lynched bodies were broadcast on television, generating a sense of horror hitherto unknown to most Peruvian households. Journalist Luis Morales collected statements from several community members during the exhumation. After the exhumation, the forces of law and order did not remain in Uchuraccay.
