On January 26, 1983, a group of eight journalists arrived in Yanaorco around 8:30 a.m., two hours after leaving Ayacucho. The journalists had hired cab driver Salvador Luna and made a brief stop in Paclla where they had breakfast and took photographs before arriving in Yanaorco. At approximately 11:30 a.m., the journalists resumed their trip from Yanaorco guided by Juan Argumedo, who lent them a mule on which Jorge Sedano was riding, and a horse on which they carried their briefcases and cameras. This trip was part of their intention to investigate the events that took place in Huaychao, after the doubts generated in the public opinion about General Noel's information.
