On January 26, 1983, in the midst of their confrontation against the PCP-SL, the Uchuraccay community members murdered eight journalists and a guide. This event occurred days after the communities of the Huantina puna reacted against the Shining Path, killing seven Shining Path members in Macabamba and Huaychao on January 21, 1983. President Fernando Belaunde had publicly pointed to this peasant response as an example of patriotism and as the "resurgence of Ayacucho" in the face of the "ideological garbage" of the PCP-SL. Subsequently, the PCP-SL went on a rampage in Uchuraccay, making bloody incursions on three occasions during 1983: May 20, July 16 and December 24, resulting in the death of approximately 48 peasants in total.
