On August 2, 1982, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso blew up 5 high tension towers, causing a general blackout in Lima and Callao. This attack was part of the initial strategy of sabotage and attacks against state infrastructure that characterized the period 1980-1984. Attacks on high voltage pylons were a recurrent tactic of the PCP-SL to generate chaos and demonstrate its capacity for action in the capital. This type of action sought to turn Lima into a "sounding board" for the people's war initiated in Ayacucho.
