Massacre of Journalists in Uchuraccay
On January 26, 1983, eight journalists were massacred in the village of Uchuraccay, Peru. Prior to the massacre, a group of Sinchis had entered the community and incited the villagers against the Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso). This event occurred during a period of intense conflict between the Peruvian state and the Shining Path insurgency.
El 29 de enero se confirma la masacre de los periodistas en Uchuraccay, noticia difundida nacional e internacionalmente. El 30 de enero, el juez Hugo Molina toma conocimiento de la muerte de los ocho periodistas y procede a la exhumación de cadáveres e inicio de instrucción. El 2 de febrero, el gobierno nombra la Comisión Investigadora presidida por Mario Vargas Llosa. El 7 de febrero, el Fiscal Provincial denuncia a los comuneros Fortunato Gavilán, Silvio Chávez Soto y Santiago Ccente por las muertes y ordena su detención provisional.
