Military Intervention in Ayacucho
In December 1982, President Fernando Belaunde Terry ordered the deployment of military forces to Ayacucho, Peru, to combat increasing subversive activities by the PCP-SL. The initial deployment included 450 army reinforcements and the establishment of the Comando Político Militar, which subordinated police operations to military command. This intervention aimed to address the operational deficiencies of the police and regain control over the region.
El 23 de diciembre de 1982 ingresaron los primeros 450 efectivos de refuerzo del Ejército a Ayacucho, desplegándose tres batallones acuartelados. El 29 de diciembre se hizo oficial el ingreso de las Fuerzas Armadas en la lucha contrasubversiva, incluyendo a la Infantería de Marina que reemplazó a los sinchis en Huanta y La Mar. Con el establecimiento del Comando Político Militar, la policía se subordinó definitivamente al poder militar. El primer jefe militar realizó reuniones de trabajo con los mandos policiales para mejorar el desempeño y se organizaron patrullas mixtas de militares y policías.
