May national strike called by trade unions
Two-day national strike with suspension of guarantees and arrest of political and union leaders
The economic measures recently taken by the government lead to a national strike on May 23 and 24. The main governmental measures in response to the unrest were the suspension of constitutional guarantees and the declaration of a state of emergency throughout the country. Several political and union leaders (Ricardo Letts Colmenares, Javier Diez Canseco Cisneros, Genaro Ledesma Izquieta, Hugo Blanco Galdós, among others) were arrested by the forces of law and order.
