Manipulation of Abimael Guzmán by Vladimiro Montesinos
In a video recorded on April 14, 1998, Vladimiro Montesinos, a key figure in Peru's intelligence services, demonstrated how he manipulated Abimael Guzmán, the leader of the Shining Path (PCP-SL), and his partner Elena Iparraguirre. Montesinos used these manipulations to create divisions within the Shining Path and maintain control over Guzmán by offering certain privileges in prison. This manipulation was part of a broader strategy to prevent Guzmán from disrupting the status quo and to maintain the government's anti-terrorism stance.
Durante negociaciones entre 1995 y 1997, Vladimiro Montesinos utilizó concesiones carcelarias para manipular a Abimael Guzmán y Elena Iparraguirre, incluyendo permisos de reunión, acceso a documentos partidarios y privilegios como televisión y revistas internacionales. Montesinos grabó un video en abril de 1998 explicando detalladamente cómo los manipuló para conseguir dividir al PCP-SL. Guzmán percibió como logro principal la difusión de una nueva estrategia política, pero nunca existió un verdadero acuerdo de paz, sino un engaño para mantener el statu quo carcelario mientras se debilitaba la organización senderista.
