Fight for free education in Huanta
Violent demonstrations in Huanta and Ayacucho against decree that cuts free education
In June 1969, the Military Government issued decree 006, which cut the coverage of free education. This measure generated an important social mobilization of rejection in which the presence of the Association of Small Landowners and organizations linked to the Red Flag party stood out. In Ayacucho the struggle was led by the Defense Front, but in Huanta the movement became much more violent with the presence of peasants. The government reacted with extreme harshness, repressing the protest and imprisoning the leaders. Finally, the government repealed the questioned decree 006. This event has been remembered as the struggle for free education.
