In 1965, the Machu Picchu Hydroelectric Plant and the Cachimayo Fertilizer Factory were built as part of the urban modernization process of the city of Cuzco. These works were the result of the reconstructive action of the State after the 1950 earthquake that destroyed the city. The construction of these industrial infrastructures was administered by the Junta de Reconstrucción y Fomento Industrial del Cuzco, created in 1952. These industrial activities, together with wool weaving factories and handicrafts, were the main industrial activities of the department in the 1980s-90s.
