Massacre in Uchuraccay
In 1983, the community of Uchuraccay in Ayacucho, Peru, experienced a tragic event when they killed eight journalists and their guide, fearing reprisals from the PCP Sendero Luminoso. This incident was part of a larger conflict involving the PCP-SL and the Peruvian Armed Forces, which led to a cycle of violence in rural areas. The conflict resulted in the deaths of approximately 135 community members in successive attacks by the PCP-SL throughout the year.
La CVR constató que en la comunidad de Uchuraccay ocurrió una masacre en la que murieron ocho periodistas. Además de esta masacre inicial, la CVR documentó que murieron 135 campesinos quechuas en el transcurso del año posterior, la mayoría a manos del PCP-SL. El gobierno de Acción Popular nombró la única comisión investigadora del Parlamento para investigar este caso, mientras toleraba otras matanzas notables como las de Putis, Pucayacu y Cabitos.
