Reopening of San Cristobal de Huamanga National University

The reopening of the San Cristobal de Huamanga National University in 1959 revitalized the city of Huamanga and connected the region with the country's renewal and progress movement. The university became a focus of cultural, political and economic development, spreading progressive ideas and distancing itself from traditional sectors. This event also marked the emergence of the Shining Path Communist Party of Peru and its leader, Abimael Guzmán.
