April 1992 Coup d'État in Peru
In April 1992, a coup d'état occurred in Peru at a time when the Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso, SL) was already strategically defeated. The presence of independent media documenting the violence and the role of civil society organizations in questioning human rights violations contributed to the lack of popular support for both the subversive groups and the state's counterinsurgency tactics. The rejection by the peasantry, particularly the poor peasants, was significant in the defeat of the subversive groups, as they were expected to be the main force of the revolution but instead rebelled against the Shining Path.
