Detention and disappearance of Jesús Manuel Oropeza Chonta

In August 1984, Jesús Manuel Oropeza Chonta, a campesino leader, was reported missing after allegedly being detained by the police in Puquio, Peru. Despite initial denials by local police officials, a Habeas Corpus action was filed by Senator Enrique Bernales Ballesteros. Subsequent investigations led by a designated Fiscal Ad-Hoc revealed that Oropeza Chonta's body was found in the morgue of the Hospital of Puquio, having been brought there by members of the Guardia Civil.
