Durante detenciones en cuarteles como la Oroya, mujeres y menores de edad fueron violadas por efectivos del Ejército Peruano. La práctica denominada 'pichana' —que significa 'barrer'— consistía en entregar mujeres a la tropa para que las violaran, ocurriendo tanto en patrullas como en cuarteles. Un integrante del Ejército testimonia que antes de matar a las mujeres detenidas, eran 'regaladas' a los soldados, quienes las hacían pasar por todos los efectivos. Esta práctica sistemática se documentó especialmente en 1993.
