Reorganization of Public Universities in Peru
On May 25, 1995, the Peruvian government enacted Law 26457, which declared the reorganization of public universities and the dismissal of their authorities. This decision was influenced by concerns over the resurgence of terrorist activities within university campuses, following events such as the 1992 massacre where students were kidnapped and killed after being accused of terrorism. The reorganization process concluded on November 28, 2000, with the establishment of a Transitional Government Committee.
El 25 de mayo de 1995 entró en vigencia la Ley 26457 que declaró en reorganización las universidades públicas del país y la destitución de sus autoridades. El gobierno argumentó esta medida basándose en un supuesto resurgimiento de actividad terrorista en los claustros universitarios, utilizando como justificativo un atentado explosivo en el Hotel María Angola. Se declaró una Comisión Reorganizadora en la UNE (COREUNE) que culminó sus funciones el 28 de noviembre del 2000, cuando se instaló el Comité Transitorio de Gobierno.
