Attack on Ayacucho Prison by Sendero Luminoso
On March 2, 1982, a Sendero Luminoso (PCP-SL) commando attacked the Ayacucho prison, liberating 247 inmates. This event demonstrated the political and military strength of the PCP-SL against state representatives. The attack increased support from a sector of the population that viewed the PCP-SL as a response to the neglect experienced in Ayacucho.
