Capture of Sendero Luminoso Leaders and Subsequent Offensive
In January 1994, the Peruvian military captured key leaders of the Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) insurgency, including individuals known as Viajero, Rayo, and Pescador. These captures were the result of intelligence operations and provided crucial information that enabled the military to launch a comprehensive offensive against the insurgency. The offensive aimed to dismantle the strong control that Sendero Luminoso had over the Huallaga region and its population.
Tras operaciones de inteligencia en enero de 1994, el Jefe Militar del Frente Huallaga capturó a los mandos senderistas Viajero, Rayo y Pescador, cuyos testimonios fueron sumamente importantes para la estrategia contrainsurgente. Este período también vio la presentación de más de dos mil arrepentidos entre febrero y abril de 1994 ante el cuartel de Tingo María, que proporcionaron información para detectar campamentos subversivos. El Ejército intensificó operativos con mayor presencia en zonas liberadas, utilizando helicópteros artillados que ocasionaban muertes tanto de senderistas como de población civil involuntariamente atrapada en el conflicto.
