Cocaleros' Strike and the Emergence of PCP-SL Influence
In 1981, a strike by coca growers in Aucayacu marked the first noticeable presence of the Shining Path (PCP-SL) in the region. The group began organizing in various zones along the Huallaga River, advocating for armed actions against the state to support coca cultivation. By early 1982, the Shining Path had established significant control, coinciding with the rise of Ramal de Aspuzana as a drug trafficking hub.
Pobladores y autoridades municipales de Aucayacu identificaron una huelga de cocaleros en 1981 como el evento donde se sintió por primera vez una presencia oculta del PCP-SL. El PCP-SL se asentó en tres zonas principales: en la margen izquierda del río Huallaga (Venenillo y caseríos como La Merced de Locro, formando el "Bolsón Cuchara") y en caseríos frente a Aucayacu; y en el sector Gocen-Nueva Esperanza en la margen derecha. A principios de 1982, "grupos de avanzada" senderistas visitaban comunidades a lo largo del Huallaga, vistiendo uniformes negros y portando armas, predicando la necesidad de acciones armadas contra el Estado para reivindicar la coca, argumentando que las huelgas pacíficas no lograrían concesiones significativas.
