Encounter between Peruvian Army and MRTA in Pampa Puyhuan
On April 28, 1989, two trucks carrying members of the MRTA (Túpac Amaru Revolutionary Movement) unexpectedly encountered a contingent of the Peruvian Army while traveling through Pampa Puyhuan. The army stopped the trucks, and upon inspection, gunfire erupted from within the vehicles. El viernes 28 de abril de 1989, dos camiones que transportaban a miembros del MRTA transitaban por la pampa Puyhuan cuando se encontraron repentinamente con un contingente del Ejército Peruano en patrullaje de rutina. Aproximadamente 90 soldados de la base militar Pachacútec, provenientes de Lima o Piura, fueron los que participaron en esta acción. Cuando un teniente del Ejército cuestionó a los ocupantes sobre la carga de los vehículos, estos se negaron a entregar documentos y bajarse. Al ordenar que se abriera la puerta de la carrocería, se escucharon disparos desde el interior, iniciando el enfrentamiento.
